Welding wire plays a crucial role in modern welding technology, serving as a core consumable in fusion welding processes such as arc welding and gas welding. Its function extends far beyond simple "joining"; it determines the metallurgical quality and structural integrity of the final weld.
1. Core Function: Filler Metal and Electrode Function As a Filler Metal: The primary function of welding wire is to provide material that melts at high temperatures and flows into the weld pool. It mixes with the molten portion of the workpiece (base metal) to form the solidified weld metal. The amount of filler metal directly affects the geometry and size of the weld.
2. Working Principle: Melting and Metallurgical Bonding The working principle of welding wire is based on thermal energy conversion and metallurgical processes: Arc Initiation and Heating: When current passes through the welding wire, resistance heating occurs, and an electric arc is formed between the end of the wire and the base metal. Melting and Transition: The welding wire is rapidly melted by the high temperature of the arc, and the molten metal droplets transition through the arc space to the weld pool. Formation of the Weld Pool: The molten droplets mix with the base metal melted by the arc to form a liquid weld pool. Solidification and Shaping: As the arc moves, the weld pool metal loses heat and begins to solidify (crystallize), ultimately forming a weld with good metallurgical bonding.
